Having worked as a nanny for many years now, I like to think I’ve perfected my playdough recipe so that it lasts ages, the kids love helping make it and it doesn’t smell funny! Great for a rainy day or when the kids are feeling creative.
Sometimes young children can find play dough initially, not that appealing. They seem unsure about it first of all, perhaps because it’s cold to touch or a new texture. Warming it with your hands and giving them a little to feel can help them get used to it. Sit them at the table or in their highchair and have them watch you and or older children play with it, then they can feel encouraged to try it. Once they realise it’s lots of fun, there’s no stopping them!
Caroline’s Super Playdough Recipe
This is a super easy recipe and can be made in just a few minutes! Encourage your children to make it themselves, with your support. You will need:
2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
1 tablespoon sunflower oil
1 cup of water
To make it last longer, I recommend adding a couple of tablespoons of cream of tartar. This will make it last for ages.
Simply mix all the ingredients together in a big bowl. The children can do this themselves, with supervision. Add a touch more flour or water to gain the right consistency.
The dough can be cut and rolled into all manner of different shapes and sizes. Use cookie cutters and easy to clean toys to play with the play dough to make it really fun.
Top tip – lego is not a good idea, it really isn’t – unless you want to spend ages trying to get bits of dried, stuck playdough from the holes later!
Storage: keep the dough in an airtight container. It lasts a lot longer if kept in the fridge.
Make your play dough sessions a sensory treat. Add different colours and flavourings to add extra dimensions to the children’s play.
