The healthiest way to cook for your baby

So what is the healthiest way to cook for your baby and toddler?

Up until 3 years ago, I can honestly say I’d never heard of a baby cook. With all the little ones I’d looked after, I’d cook food from scratch, often making small fresh batches to last a few days or larger batches that I could freeze – all using pots and pans that involve lots of washing up and hassle. Nothing wrong with that I hear you say! And yes, that may be true, that is until you know there is something amazing, that will change to way you cook for your baby!

A baby cook will be…

  • Easier
  • Quicker (who doesn’t want to save some time in the kitchen for that extra bit of quality time with the baby or down time for yourself while the baby is napping!)
  • Healthier – all the food is simply steamed in fresh water so all the nutrients are locked in
  • No fuss – easy to clean parts that can be washed in a jiffy
  • Simple – press a button and it automatically cooks exactly to perfection and beeps to let you know it’s done!
  • Single or double version
  • Can cook meat, fish, fruit or veg!

It usually provides enough to feed the baby for a couple of meals, or a few more when they are really young. And if you’re thinking, well, this really isn’t for me as I want to do baby led weaning for my baby… Well, this works for this too. It cooks the food perfectly then you have the option of blending it, as little or as much as you want so there’s a perfect choice for how you want to feed your baby. Chopping up pieces of fruit, veg, fish or meat and offering it in small cooked pieces if you like, or blending and serving with a spoon. whatever works for you and your little one. You can just add the cooking water at the end to the food to blend to the right consistency. It’s really magic!

What can I cook in it?

I’ve found the double to be great to be able to do veg in one and fruit in the other and especially useful if you start cooking fish and meat in one, it’s nice to have one just for fruit or veg so there’s no mixing of fruit with fish and meat! There are so many easy, simple options that it’s really limitless as to how many variations there could be…

Salmon, courgette and carrot

Sweet potato, lamb and chickpea

Apple, pear and blueberry

Peach and plum

So the list could go on and on. I sometimes add a knob of butter or a drizzle of olive oil after cooking for extra nutrients, along with some herbs and spices such as cinnamon to apple or turmeric to lamb when babies are a bit older.

I can honestly say I can’t live without it and any family I work for now, I will always recommend they buy one!
